El derivado de acetometoxi (AM) de la calce\u00edna (calce\u00edna AM) se usa ampliamente para marcar c\u00e9lulas vivas, ya que puede transportarse a trav\u00e9s de la membrana celular hacia las c\u00e9lulas vivas. Los grupos \u00e9ster AM enmascaran la parte de la mol\u00e9cula que quela el calcio. Al transportarse a las c\u00e9lulas vivas, las esterasas celulares cortan los grupos AM, la mol\u00e9cula se une al calcio dentro de la c\u00e9lula (lo que resulta en la adquisici\u00f3n de una fuerte fluorescencia verde) y queda atrapada en el interior. Como las c\u00e9lulas muertas carecen de esterasas, solo se marcan las c\u00e9lulas vivas. Esta caracter\u00edstica lo hace muy \u00fatil para probar la viabilidad celular y para el marcado de c\u00e9lulas a corto plazo. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En comparaci\u00f3n con otros reactivos de marcado de c\u00e9lulas vivas (como BCECF-AM y diacetato de carboxifluoresce\u00edna), la calce\u00edna-AM es la sonda fluorescente m\u00e1s adecuada para te\u00f1ir c\u00e9lulas viables debido a su baja citotoxicidad. La calce\u00edna no afecta significativamente las funciones celulares como la proliferaci\u00f3n o la quimiotaxis de los linfocitos. Para la mayor\u00eda de las l\u00edneas celulares, se recomienda calce\u00edna AM en la concentraci\u00f3n final de 4 a 5 \u00b5M.
